Insights or Non- (Chapter 1)

Most people are heavily conditioned by all kinds of absurd beliefs that divide them and that cause havoc in the world, especially beliefs involving nationalism, religion, politics, (and even science).  To question all beliefs, and to intelligently go beyond them, may be true wisdom.

First thing in the warm spring mornings, many birds sprightly sing to the joy of the new day, to the returning sun, and to the exhilaration of sharing! 

If many folks had Pinocchio noses, their heads would be perpetually tilted by the weight of their answers.

If you exercise the mind but not the body you are cheating a very significant and important part of what you are.

True divinity does not usually interfere with the natural laws of the cosmos… and that noninterference is, in a very real way, an expression of deep compassion.

On their way to the endearing burning candle of society’s tradition, people who look at the contrast between moths and themselves need not ignore the contrast within the moths themselves.

Divinity — though it happens very rarely in the very insane world of man — may enter and visit a very innocent mind… not ever the other way around.

Unfortunately, one doesn’t need to have “right education,” wisdom, halfway decent genetics, or even compassion, to be a parent.

Normality is a common type of insanity.

The truly intelligent human being is a blessing, not a malediction, in the lives of others and regarding the health of Mother Earth.

Psychological Order and the fictitious “Center of Control”…

Sorry to be harping on this but it is a serious thing that needs attention, despite all the avoidance that miseducated people have regarding it.  As was mentioned in previous postings, when one was very young, one had a Raggedy Ann type of doll whom one carried around as a great, first-rate pal.  Then, one day, one came to the realization that the charming, smiling doll was not a real, living friend; it was fabric, stuffing, and such.  It was quite a shock at first but then one got over it very quickly (finding other interests and discovering nature).  Later in life, perception concerning the ego, or “me,” was much the same thing.  Let us say, metaphorically, that a man carries a stick around (never letting it go and even sleeping with it) day after day, month after month, year after year — just as others taught him to do — all the while believing that it was his central self, or “I,” or “me.”  Stick would feel that everything decided upon and done by thinking was what emanated (or originated) from “stick.”  Stick would be thought of to be the core essence of what one was and any suggestion to “let go” of “stick” would be construed of as utter nonsense.  Letting go of what seems to be the core of one’s essence (and means of control) would seem ludicrous and unimaginable.

The human organism can function beautifully with great harmony, insight, bliss, eternity, and order without clinging to the taught concept of an isolated/controlling “me” or “I.”  Most everyone in society, now, has a concrete ego, isolated self, a “me” that they ardently cling to, just as has been done eons ago by our primitive ancestors.  Actually look at society as it is now — with all of these “me”s and egos — with all of its chaos, wars, crimes, dishonesty, and pollution.  We must change.  We must grow beyond this nonsense.   In previous posts, one wrote about the brain as being like two halves of a walnut… and about how certain surgeries splitting these two halves — by severing the corpus callosum — left each half not knowing what the other half was thinking.  So, in actuality, two fields of consciousness were produced from one field, via advanced surgery (in living human subjects).  Times and evidence have changed; yet so many of us continue to cling to the erroneous (primitive) notion of a central “I,” a central “me” or controller.  For a very long time now, one — when thinking, instead of using the term “I,” — has been using the words of “this movement.”  Of course, for the most part in this primitive culture, one doesn’t verbally say “this movement,” instead of “I,” when actually talking to people.

“I”, “me,” and the notion of a “central controller” are all products of thought (fabrications of thought) either learned or inherited by our culture over millions of years.  “Me” depends upon (and is) a product of thought.  Clinging to that is like perpetually clinging to a little stick, fabric doll, or shadow.  Going beyond that is wisdom that does not preclude joy, bliss, insight involved with the eternal, and harmony.  On the contrary, obstinately clinging to that creates guaranteed disharmony, sorrow, and separation.  Ignorance is:  Me separate from man or so-called others.  Me separate from the environment.  Me separate from “my fears.”  Me separate from “my desires.”  Me separate from “my thoughts.”  “My religion, my country” separate from others.  (It is all so immature and involves separation that feeds conflict, friction, and endless turmoil.)  

People will read this — or will not care to read it — and go on in their standard, ordinary ways.  Even those who claim to be employing sophisticated forms of zen or meditative techniques are additionally subtly entrapped via endlessly clinging to the “me” or “central controller” in many surreptitious ways.  The brain engages in all kinds of subtle or unconscious tricks to maintain the existence of a supposed central controller who is domineering (even though no such center really exists).  One has seen this, time and time again, in many so-called “wise” others… (who have really not changed fundamentally whatsoever).  Going beyond this doesn’t demand sophisticated methods, stratagems, or meditative techniques that take time.  This demands facing something that people absolutely do not want to face; additionally, it demands going into and beyond the root of conditioning.  Most don’t really want to be bothered.  However, actual order can only come about when real seriousness exists, beyond mere fabrications.   The stick is dead; it is not part of the living tree; it is not the whole.  The whole is living and is not what symbolic thought is capable of.  An immoral, violent, primitive society has given you a stick to depend upon.  Are you still endlessly carrying it around?  Are you still relying on it, depending on it?  (Actually, it is a virtual image, a symbol that we have taken to be something real — which is even less than a dead stick — but we won’t elaborate any longer at this point.)  Profound compassion is, on the other hand, real and living; profound compassion goes far beyond mere symbols, images, and borders.

The Human Condition

We humans — most of us anyway — have a preoccupation with forms which rely on demarcations and which distinguish surfaces.  We react to parameters just as we were instructed to, and we are satisfied to allow our brains to remain within those circumscribed fields.  Even the so-called great scientists are immersed in the same methodologies and modes of perception and analysis.  Most conform to standard patterns, even when they think that they are sophisticated and free.  Most have been taught not to trust experience and feeling until they have passed through (and have been filtered by) the organizing chambers of rational thought.  Most, rather like computers, have become mere information processors and, therefore, pitifully impoverished organisms.  

We still — most of us anyway — have subject and object, self and other, man and nature.  Most have very separative minds seeing things fragmentarily (with separation and division).  Concepts and conditioning can never perceive the truth, yet most, even the professional scientists, remain caught within the realm of concepts and conditioning.  Such conditioning can be modified and can evolve some, but it will never perceive and understand the whole over time… and conditioning and evolution are time. 

Is it possible for the mind to change radically, such that it goes beyond all influence and all authority of the past?  Tribal authority is “the past,” the past which is old, stale, and antiquated.  Many can reason very cleverly, very precisely, about a lot of complicated things; but that reasoning inevitably is the essence of a background of a particular conditioning.  Truth can manifest when influence and conflict cease, but any methods, beliefs, or systems directly employed to get there will be an extension of the same old game.  There is no recipe, in time, that takes one to the timeless.  The fabricated/learned psychological self depends upon conflict and time — actually, the separate self is conflict and psychological time — and most people will likely not care to significantly end conditioning; most will want to remain in (and “as”) that conditioning, yet conditioning binds and is suffering.  True silence is deep awareness, a selflessness, a timelessness… and true silence is not what the conditioned mind can cause to happen at any particular point in time; the silence of awareness is beyond the self (and self-effort).  Most are afraid of allowing the self to come to an end psychologically.  Only in the nullification of the false is there the whole blessing of truth and real insight.  Compassion and that truth are not two separate things, as is the “perceiver” and “that which is perceived.”

Distorted Mirror Distorted Mind

A perfect mirror has no distortion.  It shows what is really there.  Can the mind be like that?

A distorted mirror, just like a distorted mind, twists things around such that reality seems askew and misrepresentation and untruth run dominant.  Fortunately, most people realize what the situation actually is when they are gazing into an intentionally distorted (circus) mirror.  Unfortunately, many people perceive via minds that are of distortion, deception, and perversion, yet they continue to think that they see things rightly.  Many of us put up a facade, for others to perceive, of what we want them to think we really are.  Many of us deceive not only others… but ourselves.  Society tends to instill various forms of distortion into the minds that partake in its offerings, and such minds then zealously accept such distortions and falsities as the truth.

Many people are overly concerned about how they (physically) appear to others.  Few people are prudently concerned about perceiving themselves as they actually are… internally, without any distortion whatsoever.  A mind that is passionate about going beyond distortion is a very scientific and spiritual mind.  It seems that very few have actually done it (i.e., gone beyond distortion) to any very significant extent. (There are ways to test this out, for accuracy; however, we will not go into that here.)  Great clarity and immense understanding are needed to see the whole.  Most, unfortunately, still function with (and “as”) symbols and fragmentary parts.  If the tools and the processes of the mind are distorted and partial, then the outcome — the results — will be equally askew, equally incomplete.  Before we accept and cherish methods to get out of this distortion, we should question whether they are possibly an extension or continuity of the same-old fallacies, which most are.

Without method, without depending upon the process of psychological time, is it possible for the mind to observe without merely utilizing the past tools (of symbolic thinking, abstraction, analysis, and image-building)?  Can the mind perceive without always carrying the burden of past formulations?  It may be the influential formulations of the past that prevent pristine perception.  We can be choicelessly observing with an intense awareness that includes all of the senses working harmoniously together as a whole, without limited thoughts always interfering… (and all thoughts are limited).

A mind that goes beyond distortion sees deeply.  Such depth goes far beyond the ordinary, far beyond the mundane.  Many cling (knowingly or unknowingly) to the ordinary, yet wish to experience what is beyond the ordinary.  What is truly beyond the ordinary may not at all be what can be categorized or placed into the realm of “experience.”  If an experience is recognized (as most are), it usually consists (more or less) of a rather mundane occurrence that the brain “recertifies,” “acknowledges,” and “classifies” via (and according to) prior memory images, prior mental retentions, and symbols.  Recognition and the reaction to things have their place, but so does an unadulterated awareness beyond mere reaction and conditioned responses.  Full enlightenment/satori — should it ever occur as a blessed visitation by that ineffable, holistic energy to a human being — may be far too immense for any kind of full mental grasping, retention, or remembrance (by the brain) to take place.  However, should it actually happen — and don’t be foolish enough to crave what you suspect that it might be — the brain will have recalled small snippets of that profound event, though what is retained is rather like mere shadows of the actual occurrence.  Great wisdom, unlike distortion, never needs to ask about whether the sacred truly exists.

Thought and Thinking

[2-26-18 Flood Update:

The river is receding well.  We are OK but have a ton of cornstalks in our yard.  I am elderly and have arthritis so may have to hire people to remove it.  Marla says that there is more rain in the forecast (coming soon).  We don’t have hydrophobia yet but we are getting there!

[Note:    Update on our River Flooding:    The river remains very high.  Our house is OK so far, except for some very minimal water in a small section of our crawl-space that a sump-pump has been taking care of.  Many local rural homes and nearby towns are flooded severely, unfortunately.  Our neighbor told us that her son had to rescue his mother-in-law from her rural home.   Her son’s mother-in-law’s home is surrounded by water and is severely flooded within the living area.  At first, his mother-in-law refused to leave… much like the couple that i mention in my update within the Flooding posting that i submitted.  Please refer back to that recent posting for that update.  We had more severe rain last night for a time; i hope that that will not cause the river to rise; it shouldn’t.   Some large logs have been hitting the horizontal I-beams that support the nearby bridge, as the water level is so very high.  Thanks again to many of you for your heartfelt comments and concerns.]

 

 

Thought/thinking is always, as we have often said, an extension or protrusion from the old storehouse of memory.  Thinking is a form or representation and symbolism used in order to achieve desires and wanted outcomes.  Interestingly, when thinking occurs in (and “as”) the brain, it often exists (mimicry-like) as a sequence of words (which are a simulation of one’s actual talking voice); thinking can also occur as a sequence of stored images that are pictorially oriented.  Thinking is essentially all virtual; even the simulation of one’s actual voice, used as internal verbal thought, is virtual.  Yet so many of us cling to (and exist “as”) this virtual, spurious pseudo-reality. The essence of thinking is reaction, mimicry, symbolism, categorization, interpretation, restructuring, recollection, recognition, abstraction, and finding meaning.  Additionally, thinking can help with real curiosity.  Profound curiosity, however, goes beyond thinking and is never merely tied to any superficial motive (such as how to make more money).  It is interesting that those of us who think better than others are (oftentimes) given better (and higher paying) jobs.  Society tends to worship complex and intricate thinking.  Ironically, it may be that the wisest minds go beyond mere motive; it is motive (and robotic reaction) that corrupts the perception (the availability) of the whole.

What we are suggesting here is that, perhaps, it is not merely the most complex thinking mind (with the most thoughts) that is to be admired.  A mind that functions as thinking when it is necessary but that often prudently goes beyond thinking may (indeed) be admirable.   Unfortunately, the brain that thinks endlessly is a very mechanical, robotic, materialistic brain.  A prudent mind that often goes beyond thinking is not the opposite of the “endlessly thinking brain” but it is (fortunately) different.  Of the two aforementioned brains, one of the two endlessly depends on being reactions and on receiving endless stimuli to feed those reactions.  The other of the two often goes beyond the realm of “reacting”; interestingly, it can — and does — function as awareness without the need for exclusively being reactions… without the need for exclusively categorizing endless stimuli.  One of the two craves experience in order to function.  The other of the two partakes in experiencing but also can function without mere dependence on experience.  Of the two, one must stay — and endlessly remain — within the field of the known.   The other of the two dwells in the field of the known but is not merely tied to that very limited domain.   All thoughts are fragmentary symbols, and the essence of the sequential arrangements that they are always involves limitation.  Profound curiosity — if it really has true depth — is not foolish enough to be satisfied with remaining in (and “as”) a limited domain.   Not enough of us question the essence of the domain that we function in… and not enough of us intelligently consider going beyond the domain that we function in; the domain we are referring to is, of course, “thinking.”  The mind can be fully aware, alive, and sensitive without needing to rely on thinking and time (though often, of course, thinking is very necessary).  Mere constant recognition is, each and every time, limited reaction as part of motives.  Each and every limited reaction with (or “as”) a motive is inaction regarding holistic perception; this inaction denies that holistic energy. 

The known cannot penetrate into (and understand) the true unknown.  The unknown, however, can flower within a mind that does not merely exist as endless reaction (i.e., endless responses of the old); a sapient mind often does not merely function with (and “as”) the known.   Deep insight and profound enlightenment/satori can only occur when the known is not functioning (as the old repetition and habitual sequence that it is).  What is truly new, what can never be recognized as the same thing over and over again, can never be experienced by the old past (i.e., by the known).  The dead known can never enter into the measureless and timeless beauty of the living unknown.  What is fallacious cannot remain what it is and enter truth. 

The beauty of real mindfulness and meditation is that they are not what can be practiced via any methodology.  All methodology relies on the known and exists within the field of time.  Time is not a path to the timeless; measure is not a means to the measureless.   Mere experience (or trying to go beyond experience) is not a path to that sacredness that is beyond all the senses.

Knowing Yourself…

There have been blogs, by others, wherein they write all about themselves.  They write about their likes, special preferences (such as favorite foods, books, and movies), social relationships, and so on and so forth.  Others write about the need to love oneself; they write about the beauty of really caring about oneself (first and foremost).  

What is oneself?  Most of us, one suspects, were educated to see the self as we were all programmed to see it.  This education is often very similar to the education that other countries have stuck to in the past, even the one which Adolf Hitler emerged from (who, by the way, loved himself dearly and who passionately encouraged others to adore him too).   

So, what is the self?  Is the self an autonomous entity separate from the environment, the whole, the rest of mankind, the animals?  When a person says that he knows himself, what does he — actually — know?  Is such knowledge a lot of recalled patterns of bygone preferences, tendencies, opinions, images, and methodologies that have occurred in (and “as”) the past?  Recalled patterns (of the past) are from the storehouse of memory.  Recollections, from (and “as”) that memory, are always old (i.e., of the past), limited (i.e., snap-shot-like), partial, and (therefore) incomplete.  Those recollections of self, additionally, are heavily influenced by the past education and culture in which one was raised.   One’s fundamental conceptions of self were poured into one (and absorbed) during one’s youth.  Recollections and labels “about the self” are always of the past.  They are images or linguistic symbols from (and about) “what was.”  

Many people feel empowered by an elevated sense of self.   Many are enamored about themselves and they write about themselves a lot (either positively or negatively), or they are very obsessed about their physical appearance.   However, the self may not necessarily be what society has had each of us accept and take for granted.   There is a very good chance that a lot of primitive miseducation has taken place for many years.  

Unfortunate is the man or woman whose self is a fenced in, segregated, walled-off conglomeration of past images and symbolic thoughts convinced that a special space isolates what they are (or what “one is”) from the rest of life on earth.  Being walled-in is a surefire recipe for depression, no matter how financially fortunate one’s life has been, no matter how wonderful one may (superficially) think one appears physically.  To have private dominion apart from the rest of life, as something special and separate, is no cup of tea that real perception is interested in sipping.   It may be that real liberation does not come from coddling and worshipping the isolated self, as so many immature and egocentric people tend to do, but (instead) comes about when the self is understood and joyfully transcended.   The circumference around an egocentric mind is always limited, primitive, self-concocted via absorbed patterns… and is standardized, mediocre, and regimented.  Most people are very immersed in (and “as”) such a circumference; very few of them will care anything whatsoever about prudently going beyond it.  A limited, walled-in circumference inevitably brings sorrow.  All of the psychological therapy and superficial entertainment in the world will not put an end to that sorrow.

Instead of coming up with notions about “oneself,” go out (for an enlightening change) and perceive without the separative boundaries and isolated perspectives that were implanted in (and “as”) the past.  Is the perceiver so very separate from the perceived?  Walls of delusion may experience a lot of things; however, walls of delusion will never understand and see the uncontaminated truth and the eternal.   Real understanding, bliss, and balance are not of dead limitation, stale recognition, and segregation.

Group Mentality

Scientists say that we evolved from fish (over millions of years of evolutionary time). Many fish remain together in large schools.  We, as human beings, still cluster together in groups (often, just as the fish do, out of fear or out of the desire to be associated with something more substantial). When one “belongs” to a sizable group, it allows one to identify oneself with (and “as”) something larger and (apparently) much more significant. One identifies with (and becomes) the group. “It is ‘my country'”… which is so vast, powerful, and beautiful… and, so they say, “It is what I am willing to die for.” The aforementioned sentence is a typical thing stated often in various countries, each thinking that their ways and systems are better and more righteous.

Similar things happen with political parties and organized religions. Each person identifies with that large organization (which takes him away from his obscure, unsung, little self). Or, similarly, one identifies with one’s images of God; one identifies, then, with images (that one is) of something powerful, large, and almighty. People identify with something larger that is (they believe) “protecting them,” keeping them safe in a world of full of disorder and chaos.  Some people — full of indoctrinated prejudices — exclusively identify with their race, culture, political group, or family units (apart from all others).  Often, unfortunately, it is mostly about their race, or their culture, or their political group, or their family… and the rest can (more or less) go to grass.  Few of us identify with the little, poor woman or man who labors all day in the vegetable fields under a very hot sun and who gets next to nothing for payment; few actually see a little, defenseless animal as a reflection of the whole.  

Many of our man-made groups, however, are usually not as safe or as necessary as we have been lead to believe. People clinging to individual countries and religions have created wars (against each other) for millennia. People have fought about their different projections of God — and about their little idealistic groups and separate systems — for eons.

Fortunately, there are those who see beyond mere boundaries and groups and who simply help all others.  This affection and care for all others goes beyond the realm of humans and extends into the beautiful realm of animals and plants.  Some help, with real action, not for mere monetary reward but, instead, because they have real love in their hearts for all (beyond what any herd-mentality dictates).  

Can real intelligence stand alone? Without being a hermit, can one not identify with — or belong to — anything (i.e., to anything that, through limited groups and systems, separates man)? It may be that real and lasting peace may come when we go beyond the limited groups, systems, and images that we — so robotically — identify with. The mind that is seriously and intelligently aware transcends separative borders and, hence, goes beyond conflict.  (This “going beyond borders” goes beyond mere external borders and, additionally, involves transcending internal borders, false separation, and internal mental conflict.)  Such a mind, if it is truly intelligent and pristine, is beyond belonging to separative groups that cause havoc, friction, and indifference in the world.  (Our inner conflicts and separations project out into society as outer conflicts and separations.)  Prudent emptiness (which is freedom beyond being lead) — beyond crude traditions and beyond images of the past — does not need to identify with anything. Humility and real innocence need not clutch at (and identify itself with) something “larger.”  Profound innocence is a vulnerability that does not merely turn to violence (i.e., violent ways) to achieve continuity.

To look with real innocence is to look, to perceive, with (and “as”) a pristine purity that is uncontaminated.  Looking with what is jaded, distorted, and fallacious, of course, certainly won’t cut it.  Many have assumed, with their preconceptions, that they observe correctly and rightly.  Many end up in conflict, worldwide, over what they consider is right… religiously, politically, economically, nationally, socially, and within the psychological realm… all this involving limited, sequential (learned) patterns.  Multitudes cling to their patterns, their traditions, their customs, their absorbed ways of seeing the world according to the programming which they were taught (from fragmentary groups).  The world ends up with conflict, friction, wars, and endless bickering (as is currently going on).

Some of our learned patterns have been useful medically and also somewhat within technological realms.  However, beyond that, psychologically and such, we have clung to traditions, beliefs, precepts, and patterns that tend to cause friction, separation, and conflict.  The question is:  Can one, without needing time, wash the slate (of the mind) clean so that one can look purely (without what one, psychologically, has accumulated)?  However, who is going to do the cleaning?  Is the “cleaner” actually separate from what is being cleaned?  If the cleaner is not really separate from the content of the rubbish (that needs purging) will the cleaner be cleaning according to the content that was previously implanted in (and “as”) his (or her) consciousness?  Can the conditioned mind perceive that the very images of self and of psychological control may be part of the content, part of the conditioning?  Since all (conditioned) beliefs, precepts, psychological traditions, and customs take time — including the supposition of a special internal center controlling thoughts from some kind of psychological distance — can the mind look without time (without depending on sequences of conditioned patterns)?  This would mean that the mind would look without functioning with (and “as”) past accumulations.  All accumulations from the past are “from time” and “involve time.”  To innocently perceive — without any fallacious center (that takes distance and time to look) and without any limited, accumulated, sequential patterns that were absorbed — does not require time… does not require practice.

One cannot practice meditation.  One cannot practice real love.  Both involve an intelligence beyond time and sequential conditioning.  It may be that real innocence exists when there is no psychological “me” put together by accumulated boundaries, separations, images, and traditions formulated of limited (symbolic and sequential) thoughts.   It has been accumulated boundaries, separations, and traditions that fabricated images of the “me.”  The limitless of eternity is never seen by any conditioning that is limited, bounded, fragmentary, and that is merely an accumulation within (and part of) a learned sequential movement through (and “as”) space/time.  Insight is beyond the accumulated.  Insight is beyond the limited.

Directionlessness

All of us function, in life, with regard to various motives.  We react in (and “as”) conditioned responses involving these motives.  Each motive gives us a certain direction to move in; we follow these specific directions, based on motives, throughout life (just as we were taught to).  Very few of us have considered directionless.  Very few have inquired into the possibility of perceiving without being constantly influenced by motives or directions.  Each of us has motives and directions that each one clings to and functions from, (even the so-called great scientists).  Often, these motives conflict — with the motives or directions of other people — and friction ensues.  Desire and greed are often involved with the motives that people have (and desire and greed tend to function from — and “as” — the reactions that they are psychologically).  One’s mind, too, can harbor conflicting motives… conflicting directions to pursue or go in.

A very wise mind, however, is involved with a measureless directionlessness.  To observe purely, without tainted motives or covert conditioning influencing what is seen, requires a highly unprejudiced mind that does not merely perceive via fragmentation and limitation.  Looking in a certain direction — which most all of us tend to do — by its very action (or, rather, reaction) precludes other directions and is always limiting and partial.  Even precise scientists are limited — in their own fields and by their own (learned) processes, habits, prejudices, and procedures — and most would likely laugh if one suggested that they consider directionlessness.  However, a truly sagacious mind would perceive the limitation and fragmentation that motives and directions inevitably bring with them; such a wise mind may then go beyond mere motive (and beyond mere direction).

A mind that perceives beyond merely having a “motive” or “psychological direction” must be a very dynamic mind.  To look (at times) beyond mere motive or beyond specific desire takes tremendous intelligence and great purity.  Directionless is not a stagnant state that one mesmerizes oneself in; rather, it is a causeless explosion of awareness without mere motive and without the influence of psychological conditioning.  It truly is an explosion without any cause.  It is a movement without any direction.  Greed and desire have nothing to do with it; greed and desire are of motive; greed and desire always involve a specific direction.

There is a vast difference between a mind that often is of directionlessness and a (common) mind that always functions by way of motive and direction.  Of the two mentioned in the aforementioned sentence, one of the two always (without exception) reacts (via motives and directions set up by limited influences); the other, of the two — though it also often reacts and is choicelessly aware of the reactions — may often go beyond that… such that it exists with (and “as”) motiveless perception (beyond borders).  Only one of the two can ever perceive and understand the whole (instantly, without mere sequential process); the other must be caught in time-bound, sequential parameters that manifest as fragmentation and limitation.

The beauty of real ecstasy occurs only when harmful (i.e., fallacious) ways are finished while true joy blossoms without motive.

We sure hope that the coming new year brings, with it, more sense and more compassion in people.  People, unfortunately, are very gullible and it is easy for the fat-cat bureaucrats to get people to believe just about anything.  Please do not get all wrapped up in belief; please intelligently go beyond all belief and tradition-oriented presumption.  Do not ever merely believe what i write within this blog; i do not wish to be your authority.  (There are plenty of charlatans out there who will gladly be your authority, if that is what you wish.)  Each one of us has to deeply question things and look beyond all of the propaganda.  If the world has any hope at all, we need to go beyond the ruts that we are mindlessly entrenched in.  Governments that rob the poor to feed the filthy rich (and that neglect environmental health and global unity) need to be radically questioned/altered.  The world is very small and fragile and it will not last — in its balance naturally as it has — if we continue to lack seriousness and continue to act with negligence regarding the delicate whole.   Despite what you were “taught,” you may not be anything separate from all of the fragile creatures and humans of this planet; it may be that you are them.  If you do not care — and continue reacting as the fat-cat bureaucrats want you to — it may be like the right hand not at all caring about the left hand (and thinking it is separate).

Jesus said:  “The dead are not alive, and the living will not die. During the days when you ate what is dead, you made it come alive. When you are in the light, what will you do? On the day when you were one, you became two. But when you become two, what will you do?”

Mediocrity and the Unconditioned

Most of us, i feel, were educated to accept innumerable fallacies as facts and as ordinary phenomena to be taken for granted.  These have been presented to us since birth and, although it wasn’t deliberate indoctrination, the word “indoctrination” is very applicable to what actually has largely taken place.  In our youth, we were not encouraged to deeply question society’s values, doctrines, principles, beliefs, and systems (and go beyond them).  We were molded to conform, to remain with (and “as”) the status quo, to accept competition… and deviating from that (significantly) was definitely not tolerated.   Some people, reading or hearing about this, would say, “Yes, I know,” or “Yes, I realize that.”   It is unlikely, however, that many have even the foggiest idea of just how vast the conditioning (and indoctrination) runs into their lives.   We were not brought up to be truly open, creative, questioning, deeply insightful human beings; we were, for the most part, programmed to be copiers, replicators, and obedient parts of the machine.    

Most of us do not see the world as “one organism”; we perceive the many parts, many species, many others, many sections.   We’ve used thought (as we were taught to) for advantageous purposes, yet most all of us greatly overuse it (dwelling, almost exclusively, in that realm).  (Some of us who absorbed calculated methods to go beyond thought, by sitting on mats and all such planned nonsense, have substituted mere glorified hypnotic technique to displace thinking, all the while thinking something great has been accomplished.)  Very few of us have intelligently seen the limitation of thinking and have truly (intelligently) gone beyond that limitation.   Thinking, being the sequential arrangement of symbols (that it is)… is always partial, always very limited.  Thinking is a very necessary tool, a necessary instrument that is extremely useful (at times); however, at other times, it is unnecessary to remain in (and “as”) the realm of thinking.  Need the mind always merely exist as symbols, as sequential tokens to attain (or “represent”) something?   The very supposed core of most people’s selves consists of fragmentary images and symbols (such as “me” and “I”) that they have absorbed from others.  So many are existing in a virtual world of man-made images and fabricated constructs that consist primarily of mere representational ideas and habitually learned patterns.

 Real perception, real intelligence goes beyond all this — and that is where the real bliss and eternity exists — not by accumulating more methodologies, not by absorbing more systems and patterns, not by blindly adhering to more authority.  The truly perceptive mind looks without outward and inward authority.  It sees beyond the symbolic, the partial, and the taught.  Such a mind is of real bliss and order.  It has no teacher, no resting place, no anchor that others have provided in (and “as”) the past.  Without looking with (and “as”) the dead past, such a mind may be truly free, pristine, and unspoiled.  There is no procedure or “how” regarding getting there.  A lot of people prefer to comfortably remain in the leftover debris that was shoveled to them, and they call it “security” and “wellbeing,” yet they remain full of anxiety, uncertainty, and sorrow.   Real (fundamental) security and genuine bliss, however, go beyond the residual norms of a fragmented, nocuous society.

Second-handedness

Real mindfulness, real meditation is not sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat.  Such sitting is calculated and is structured to gain something… (which is greediness).  On the other hand, innocent, pristine awareness throughout the day (that is not merely influenced by the patterns and symbols that others have provided) may be very prudent.  Is it real awareness when one is looking with what other people have poured into one?  Is real awareness, real living, what can take place through the secondhand edicts or patterns provided by others?  When perception takes place through mere symbolic images and via learned psychological separation, is such perception what was copied from others and (additionally) limited and superficial?

It may be that secondhand has little to do with actual living.  However, many rely on (and habitually exist “as”) secondhand, without question.

Going beyond outside authority and inside authority…

Most of us see things in fragments (just as we were taught to).  The intrinsic nature of thinking is, in itself, fragmentary.  Thought, being symbolic, being limited, being merely representational, can never perceive the whole.  Since most of us cling to thought, worship thought, and are tied to thought… we seldom, or never, perceive the whole.  The whole cannot be seen through — or by — the fragments.  People enmeshed in (and “as”) this fragmentation often then choose a priest, a guru, a zen monk, a leader, or an authority (and some techniques) to lead them to truth.  Out of their fragmentation, out of their confusion… they choose someone to lead or guide them; or they choose some technique or method.  (Out of their confusion, they choose.)  It may be, however, that there is no path or map to the pathless… no authority, no procedure — in time and that takes time — to get to the timeless.  

Few truly stand alone without depending on outside authority.  Few, further still, go beyond inside authority.  One can easily say that one is free and is not influenced by outside authority… while, all along, one is heavily embellished with structures (internally) that were — long ago — poured into one by outside authoritarian influences.  One can maintain that one is untethered by outside authority, yet (internally) be riddled with conditioning stemming from outside structures and patterns that came from others early in one’s life and over the years.  A mind that truly goes beyond the outside and accumulated inside molds and patterns is quite extraordinary and blessed.  Eternity and the sacred then manifest.  No one can take you there… not even your accumulated structures and sense of self.  It takes real humility to go beyond your own accumulated patterns and judgments… real innocence and freedom.  That true freedom, that true humility and innocence is a psychological dying; there is no method to “do” it.  That unshaped (non-concocted) psychological dying is nothing cadaverous or to be afraid of; it is majestic life beyond canned, dead molds. The profound magic and the bliss are not in the limited patterns — including your own — that anyone can give.

Beyond all the so-called experts…

Profound mindfulness, deep awareness, and real meditation are not three separate things.  They are all one in the same.  Unlike what many so-called experts may tell you — including people who call themselves gurus, zen monks, priests, or spiritual guides — one doesn’t need to concentrate on a fixed point, on one’s breathing in and out, on a mantra, a prayer, or on anything else in order to be really mindful or deeply aware.  Actually, doing the aforementioned things — to get something out of them — usually makes the mind duller and more mesmerized.   As in hypnosis, concentration (purposefully done) tends to limit the mind to fixed points; concentration is an exclusionary process.  Concentration and similar forms of effort all cause the mind to focus on details and to engage in a concocted plan (or plans) in order to get some kind of result.  Profound awareness, however, is not exclusionary; it goes beyond mere details and is never the mere result of some blueprint or mentally formulated plan.  

One can practice methods by so-called experts ad infinitum; one can concentrate on one’s breathing, one can concentrate on a repeated mantra or on a so-called special prayer, (or on any other image or set of images that the mind focuses on).  These limited means — manufactured and provided by others — will never bring about true, pristine, and real enlightenment.  One might get some relaxation or some feelings that the mind construes as being “invigorating” from them… but these things will never be real and profound enlightenment.  A stale, limited means, psychologically, never leads to an unlimited, vast end.  Profound awareness is not something that you can rotely learn from any book, any blog, any guru, any zen monk, any priest or any authority (including your own so-called central, inner authority).   Real awareness (which may flower into true enlightenment) is never exclusionary and is never the result of some rote practice or structured technique.  Effortless, non-separative observing without all of the preprogrammed conditioning — simply put — is not merely the result of more preprogrammed methods, procedures, or images put forth by yourself from what others have provided.  Therefore, methods that so-called experts give to you, sell to you, or entice you with, are absolutely out.  What they offer is not cogent, not viable, if you have significant awareness.  And if you don’t have significant awareness you’ll be more than willing to play their games, give them money, adhere to their plans, worship their idols, or travel across the globe to be with them.  If you want to be second-hand, then, by all means, follow their methods; however, one thing is for sure: second-hand never comes upon real enlightenment.

It takes no time for the wise mind to be empty of all of their methods, blueprints, schemes, and concoctions.  Methods and techniques take time; however, not being conditioned by them takes no time whatsoever.  Methods and procedures have nothing to do with pristine, non-manufactured awareness; and without methods and procedures, time is not a factor, time is not operating as it does for most people.  I will not give you methods to practice… or plans to rigidly follow.  We think that someone needs to show us the way, the path; we feel that there is security in that “showing.” However, real insight, real profundity functions in a motiveless, directionless, unplanned way… which is not at all to say that it is haphazard and chaotic.  Most of us are perpetually relying on the methods, systems, images, and constructs of others; then we think we need further methods and systems to go beyond all this, which is absurd.  The very way that most of us observe things via separation (from a so-called center) is the result of stale methodologies learned from others.  There is no path that leads to the pathless.  There are no procedures — that take time — that lead to the timeless.

Beyond Self Suffering…

We all suffer.  We suffer physically and psychologically.   None of us escape it.  Here is a little secret about the true nature of suffering:  It is neither just yours nor mine; it is universal.  It is our suffering.  We all share in it… some more than others.  When one of us suffers… we all suffer.

So many of us habitually run from suffering.  We use all kinds of legal and illegal drugs to escape from suffering.  There are plenty of drug-addicted and alcohol addicted people in the world, many of whom insist that they don’t have a problem and can stop whenever they wish to.  Instead of habitually fleeing from suffering, few of us have embraced it without separation, without deep-seated bias and friction.  Of course, if suffering is overwhelmingly intense (physically), then one would naturally not care to embrace it or have much of a relationship with it.  A wise mind, however, may act — and not merely react — to milder forms of suffering in ways unlike what most people do.

Unlike most minds, the wise mind rarely suffers psychologically.  A mind that is wise — due to understanding itself and its contents — is of a vast, immense order.  Such order is a flame that incinerates the chaotic disorder that psychological suffering feeds upon; hence, psychological suffering, for such a mind, dissipates.  Order doesn’t easily manifest as disorder.   A mind that is truly orderly rarely suffers.

Thinking, in human beings, stems from (and involves) problem-solving.  Thinking is a tool.  Many of us continue to think (and entertain thought) even when thinking is no longer necessary.  This strict adherence to thought/thinking is a distorted habit that nourishes all kinds of psychological disorder.  Thinking is largely symbolic and representative; merely existing as one symbol after another (in sequence) is much like substituting symbols and signs for the real thing.  Such substitution rarely leads to lasting joy and pristine revelry; accepting shadows as reality rarely leads to sunlit bliss.  Too many of us were educated wrongly; thinking is only a tool; it need not be the essence of consciousness.  If you have made tools as the essence of your consciousness, you are bound to suffer.

A wise mind can exist beyond the tools, beyond the shadows, beyond mere symbols and abstractions.   Such a mind is beyond suffering (though it has immense empathy); it never needs to take recreational drugs, alcohol, or take antidepressants.  Wisdom begins when psychological suffering ends.

Appearance matters…

Appearance matters.  However, what is much deeper matters much more.  To look elegant and spectacular on the outside, yet to have an inside that is corrupt, uncaring, tainted, depressed, and disorderly… is a bit of a sorry waste.  Many wear fancy suits and ties or fashionable dresses that look sensational; however, sensations are one thing, real order and profundity are another.  To have a marvelous house, an impeccable lawn, a stunning car, and name-brand clothes is one thing;  to be internally rich, orderly, caring, perceptive, and sagacious… is another.  Most of us were groomed and tutored to chase after — and care about — the outward things.  Most were not deeply encouraged to care about the inward things.

Though many have riches, possessions, and fancy clothes, a huge number of them are not beaming with ongoing joy and compassion.  It may be that real richness, in life, has little to do with possessions and things; rather, it involves order beyond separation, accumulation, groping, and mere desire.  A profound, inward order cannot occur when the mind merely falls for outward appearances and ordinary values.  The real treasure is not out there “to get”; distance and time have nothing to do with it.  Why have so many of us depended, so heavily, on distance and time?  At the precise moment that the mind seeks pleasure… joy is gone.  We are not suggesting that one should not do pleasurable things now and then;  just don’t get mesmerized by a pursuit that may often not be necessary at all.

With the real ending of distance and separation — not the mere abstraction of an ending or intellectualization about ending — joy is blossoming, compassion is blossoming.  Then there is no striving for superficial things.  Depth does not cling to superficiality.  To see this, one must perceive beyond the surface.

Learned meditation is not meditation…

Meditation — so-called meditation — is often compartmentalized by people to fit into a certain part of their day or week.  During a specific time, they then practice what they’ve been taught in order to achieve something.  However, the real thing may not be what the two aforementioned sentences shine a light on.  The real thing may occur all day long, even as one is driving a car, walking on a wooded path,  planting flowers, or washing windows.  It may involve watching (without learned separative images or opinions) at the way you talk to others at work, or the way the mind reacts to a hurt creature or mentally sick person.  Then the mind is aware… not according to someone else’s blueprint, not according to someone else’s concocted methodology… but just naturally, completely, effortlessly, without mere past conditioning.   Meditation is extremely simple, but our complex minds are often too “knotted up” to perceive directly without looking through the contaminated screen of past knowledge.  We were brainwashed to perpetually categorize everything, to look with a fabricated space from a learned image (of a supposed central “controller”) at things (via separation).   That separation was traditionally inherited or learned.  Even when there are no problems, we invent problems to solve.   Another thing: we, as so many others, constantly strive to be perpetually entertained.  What if we needn’t always be entertained?  What are so many using entertainment to escape from?  If our inner selves were not so imbued with limitation and stagnation… then maybe we wouldn’t be so disturbed about not being entertained and with facing what we (internally) really are.

Mindfulness, too, has those so-called experts who tell you how to manufacture clever, little tricks in order to keep your mind “mindful.”  However, a mind that merely uses procedures from others (and little tricks) to be aware… is aware as a result of something.  Profound awareness is not a mere result, however, but hypnosis and being a mere automaton certainly is.  The real thing is not what someone can teach you to be, or give you to absorb (or mechanically practice).  Real meditation is measureless and beyond conditioning… and what is measureless and unconditioned cannot merely be learned from another.  The one who truly meditates does not know that he or she is meditating; nor does he or she care to know.  However, in real, whole self-understanding and profound awareness, there is a profundity that negates sorrow, depression, fear, and mechanical mental parroting.  There is real bliss when the mind is aware without being in a mold poured by others.  However, there is no map or set of procedures (called religious or otherwise) that was devised by others that will really get you there.  You have to do the work.  And that work isn’t sitting on one’s behind on a superficial mat for 30 minutes, thinking one has achieved something marvelous.

People who belong to a cult will — as members of the cult — insist that they are there of their own volition, and are not (in any way) being brainwashed.  They will inform you about how secure and happy they are.  The leaders of the cult will inform them about what is what and how things should be done, and they (the leaders) will not (under any circumstances) invite them to question everything and to go beyond the patterns provided.

Society, as it currently exists, is largely like that; it is very “cult-like” in the way it operates.  However, most people do not want to go into that possibility… just like the way cult members do not want you to question their position within the cult.  Whether we care to admit it or not, politics, religion, education, and similar branches of society are very cult-like.  Suggesting, for instance, that the Catholic Church — with its (pointy hat) bishops, with its robed members who claim to be middlemen between you and God, with its symbols, methodical (esoteric) gestures, ringing bells, threats of punishment/eternal damnation, and strict practices/beliefs — is a cult would shock and disturb many people.  However, just because something is immensely popular does not nullify the possibility that it is, indeed, a cult.  So many of us are mesmerized by our orthodox religions, by nationalism, by ingrained educational precepts (that we adhere to without question) that we would even fight or kill for them.  In fact, this is what is largely going on in the world right now — as it has been for many crass generations — this fighting for what they taught us to believe in.  They don’t tell us to intelligently question our patterns, to go beyond our divisive patterns and beliefs and to love without promise for future rewards.

When you accept being a pawn, and have accepted it for many years, it is very disturbing when someone challenges you to transcend beyond being in that rigidity.   Most of us were educated by those whom (themselves) have been produced by (i.e., indoctrinated by) the system.  Some of this education, of course, has value.  However, some of it is extremely deleterious; yet we accept all of it without question.  Most of us were educated about what to think… not how to think.   Most of us were educated to be specialists and to react in certain definite ways, not to be what sees and acts holistically.   Most of us were educated to accept and to believe… not to deeply question.   The end result, of all this, is that most of us are not dynamic, whole individuals but, rather, are brainwashed puppets (who think that we have freedom).

Psychologically, the very way we look at the world has been heavily tainted by others (and by the language that we absorbed); and through that second-hand screen, we look.  Instead of considering that the observer may not be separate at all from the observed, we look — as we were taught to — with separation, division, and symbolic labeling.  Where ingrained separation and division exist, there must be friction.  The world is full of friction and conflict and is far from being an orderly place.  Few of us flower beyond all of the cold, programmed rigidity.  That must change.

You can’t be one with Everything if you are a greedy, old image…

Integrity, in the dictionary, means wholeness, soundness.  Wholeness is being complete.  Wholeness is not one fragmentary image involved with thinking that it is related to other fragmentary images.  A fragmentary image that maintains, with a series of ideas and imagery, that it is “one” with other fragmentary images (that it sees out there) is merely deluding itself… and is still reinforcing fragmentation.  Wholeness is absolute.  One definition for absolute, in the dictionary, is “unconditional.”  Though the truly sacred is what cannot ever be thoroughly defined by limited words, it is — nevertheless, for what we must use here to communicate — inherently unconditional.  All words are symbolic and limited, and there is a supreme sacredness beyond all words, beyond all man-made, clever attempts at silence, beyond all the divisive religions that separate man (and lead to war).

Its unconditional beauty is beyond the limited patterns and clockwork paradigms of this universe.  Few are ever visited by it, for it is not what inhabits separation, fear, jealousy, indifference, and falsities.  A practiced or calculated silence designed to “get it” will only manifest false, self-created manifestations, not that profundity. The conditioned — no matter what technique is used, no matter what expert is followed — will never bring about the unconditioned.  Conditioning must end (through uncharted, non-concocted understanding and natural self -awareness), and not “to get something.”  Sitting cross-legged (with your eyes shut) in order to achieve something “special” merely reinforces acquisition and the greed of the self.  If observing takes place naturally, quietly, without always trying to achieve, without learned separation and abstractions, without merely always groping to get… then, perhaps, that sacred, eternal movement may explode through the organism; if not, it simply doesn’t.  One must be indifferent about whether or not it comes; that can only take place if the mind is whole and sound… (and that timelessness, that sacredness need not appear just because the mind is whole and sound).  The ending of conditioning occurs when awareness exists beyond mere acquisition, beyond mere symbolism, beyond limitation, and beyond the mere glorification of a fallacious, psychological center.  The repetitious notion of a controlling center is a misrepresentation, and is a furthering of the conditioning actually taking place; it is an extension of erroneous conditioning.  Few of us realize about the real joy of psychologically dying to an inner psychological center, to inner psychological greed; the image of a central controller (i.e., a central boss that dominates) is a big part of (primitive, inelegant) greed.  Going beyond that is real wisdom and joy.  Such joy is bliss without motive… and it is not a mere result… is not a mere reaction.

Caught within the System…

Many of us feel that we are in the network of things, operating freely and doing what we choose to do according to our own individualistic preferences and whims.  Few of us consider that it may be the other way around.  Few of us consider the possibility that the vast majority of us are a projection of the system, an extension of the system.  Most of us were inculcated by the system and, when we function and react, it is the system operating.  That system, developed and maintained by man’s tradition, seems to give us much security and order.  However, if that very system is largely based on fragmentation, separation, domination, and friction — which it is — then the security is fallacious… non-existent, or limited.  Many of us accept — without question — that there are separate countries and separate individuals (these individuals each with their own separate ego).  None of this may be truly separate, but the system has us perceive and react to accept that; then friction and wars (and suffering) go on and on.

We were taught that we are separate from our fears.  We were taught that we are separate from “others.”  We were taught that nature and man are (somehow) separate.  Our “I”s, our “me”s, our separative countries and religions, may be essentially a projection of the system, where there is no real freedom whatsoever.  Few of us step out of it (into a larger whole that is not merely absorbed). Most of us are content to remain in (and “as”) the system.  We think it offers security and joy.  However, look at the world around you and how people react in in it (and “as” it).  There is overwhelming disorder in what is currently going on in (and “as”) society.  We need to change.  We need to change, not according to more ideas about how things “should be,” not by more political and religious differences, or according to the same old, traditional ways.  Real wholeness, real integrity is beyond the system; however, few care to truly move beyond the system.  It is like forever staying in a limited, rusty old cage (and thinking that you are joyous and free).

Awareness beyond the “me and mine”…

In real mindfulness, in profound awareness, there is an eternal simplicity (i.e., an uncomplicated movement) beyond excessive and needless mental ornamentation.  Then there is not a separate watcher apart from the observed… perceiving from a so-called center.  In profound awareness, there is no separate center that is perceiving thoughts or emotions that “it has.”  One is the thought or thoughts (or emotions) as they occur; the idea that something separate “has” them is just another pattern of thought (that is primitive and fictional).  That so-called center, invented by the other thoughts, is not only unnecessary… it is what leads to needless conflict, friction, and separation in (and “as”) the mind.  This internal friction then extends out into society.  Awareness of the illusory self need not take place if there is no projected, illusory self.  In profound awareness, one cannot “know” that one is deeply aware, nor does one care to; profound awareness exists beyond mere measurement (and that is part of its beauty).

When the real beauty of awareness exists beyond all of the unnecessary complexities and friction, then needless patterns (of thinking) do not take place.  Such an occurrence is not a lack of intelligence; on the contrary, it is supreme intelligence (that goes beyond repetitive, second-hand reactions).  Without effort, awareness beyond all of the superfluous patterns goes beyond mere disorder, mundane experience, and recognition.  A learned, isolated, fallacious center would be incapable of understanding the depth of what the aforementioned sentence means.

Beyond words and psychological time…

To wield witty words, to accumulate a lot mentally and in the material world, to have power, and to have security, is zilch if one is not of a holistic compassion beyond the so-called central self.  Holistic compassion (beautifully) does not depend on any outside or inside authority for guidance.  In holistic compassion, there is no direction, no blueprint as to the right way to go.  Society spoon-feeds us everything.  So many of us are used to being spoon-fed.  We are so impressionable and easily influenced by (and “as”) reaction.  Our propensity for looking with what others have spoon-fed to us runs deep.  What may be intelligent is a quantum leap going beyond all that.  That quantum leap may not be of time.  Psychological time, as the associated past of what one has learned, and as obtrusions from the past as what the future might be, does have some place.  However, the timeless, beyond that limited domain, is also of great significance.

In the timeless, there is no seeking, no authority, no goal (projected from, and “as,” the past), no direction, and there are not mere tokens and labels (as words) that keep one in fragmented, sequential symbolism.  In the timeless, real compassion and holistic intelligence — beyond the limited, isolated, coldly indifferent, and false — manifest.

It May Be Wise To Be Different

True and profound insight is like a rare jewel that very few ever partake in within (and “as”) life.  Profound insight is not what someone can merely — through effort — acquire or obtain.  Insight is not like a materialistic possession; one cannot merely “have it”; one cannot merely decide to “get it.”  It would be erroneous, for example, to say that “I have an insight.”  Profound insight, besides not merely being what one can possess… is beyond the limitation of a fragmented, so-called central “I” or controller.  The so-called central regulatory agent may think it has something… but what it has will not likely be profound insight.  Real insight may come when the mind is intelligently empty (and not merely filled with the crass, fragmentary patterns of others). 

Unfortunately, profound insight eludes most minds.  The fact that most minds operate via fractional conflict, a fallacious (isolated) center, and operate via mostly mere details and function (with and “as”) separative patterns, has a lot to do with this.  Correct education can help us to go beyond our limited ways.  Before that can happen, educators themselves must change positively.

No doubt, most people who read this blog posting will merely reduce insight into an abstraction, to another idea.  However, doing so is like never having the passion to really look at nature; it’s like going through life with an empty heart… never really feeling.

Love…

Profound love is like humility… one cannot know that one has it.  One can suspect that it may be there, but considering (in depth) about oneself “having love” is a bit of a narcissistic action and, as such, negates love; additionally, love is not a possession (so is not what one can merely “have.”)  Real love is not (whatsoever) what is measurable; love has an essence of immeasurability.

Unfortunately, the so-called love that many are involved with pertains to images that they have about others (and about other things).  These images, however,  are what composes their minds from patterns absorbed from the past (and held as the accumulated past).  Love, involving absorbed and learned images, is usually very superficial and limited.  Profound love is not, for example, a learned and absorbed image (called “I” or “me”) subsequently associating itself with another image called, for instance, (her).  A relationship between two learned, fragmentary images is not much of a relationship at all.  Love goes beyond the fabricated walls of mental images and psychological symbols.   Love is not possession, attachment, nor identification.  Profound love may exist when the ego (the image of self) is not.  Merely identifying the image of self with other living things is not love.  Profound love transcends fragmentation, is eternal, and is beyond the ordinary patterns in time (and of time).   Timelessness is an immeasurability beyond self-fabrication.

Beyond the ordinary mind…

There were two entities.  One was rather crass.  It merely went on as an extension of society… immoral, indifferent, separate, closed, common, compulsive, stale, rather indifferent about nature, respectable.  There was another entity.  It was open, compassionate, aware, whole, moral beyond the ills of society, in close relationship with nature, global.  Highly spiritual, it did not care to belong to any separative government nor religion that (separates man from man contributing to war).  It was a danger to all separative elements of the false. 

One of the entities was often bored.  It would frequently need to find escape in all kinds of entertainment (and with various forms of drugs).  It was often composed of recurring fears.  It depended on walls of isolation for its very existence (isolated existence).  The other entity was often content in and of itself.  That self, however, was nothing to be measured, for no limited walls defined it by limited space nor limited boundaries.  Perceiving that it was not separate from the fears, the fears were understood and quickly dissipated; either that or they never existed (or needed to exist) in the first place.  Limitation breeds fear.  Limitation is of measurement and recognition; (recognition is a form of measurement).

One of the two minds continued to go deeply beyond itself to where there was no measurement, no time.  The other mind measured constantly.  Its essence mostly involved time and measurement.  Measurement takes (and is) time.  One of the minds was satisfied with superficial things; one of the minds went far beyond the superficial.  One of the minds (without the measurements of equations) understood all about existence, time, and the timeless.  One of the minds did not care about anything much other than about small details and banal experiences; it understood little of time and nothing concerning the timeless.  It, unfortunately, was never visited by anything immensely beyond the mundane.

Beyond Internal Hypocrisy…

There is an impeccability in true mindfulness.  Real mindfulness goes beyond hollow and empty ideals and stale mental blueprints.  It occurs when the mind is learning, as self-realization, (honestly) from moment to moment with what is actually taking place (without extraneous fabrications).  Then there are no ideals about “becoming better” in the future.  “Becoming better” in the future, psychologically, is usually a form of fraud, a form of deception.  Society accepts this as being normal… with one saying such things as, “I’m working on being a nicer person.”  Mental obtrusions about the future allow, in the psychological realm, cheating and duplicity to go on (consciously or unconsciously).  The future (psychologically) can be a fantasy.  One can easily fantasize anything, especially to be a better (ideal) person (while, in the present, a different reality continues to take place altogether). 

Hypocrisy, internally, of the mind to itself, is very easy.  To really learn, with integrity, is to fully be aware of what you actually are (in the present) without false pretenses or ideals about the future.  This must go beyond being brutally honest with yourself.  This goes to where fallacious separation and conflict naturally (without man’s fabrications) comes to an end.  This goes to where, when you are jealous (or angry), there is no distance or separation between the jealousy (or anger) and what you are.  Or, when fear takes place, there is no separation between the fear and what you are.  You are the fear.  When you are the fear, in (and “as”) awareness, then learning takes place about it; then it can be enlightening.  If you cover the fear up, deny that it exists, make excuses about it, battle with it from a distance, subjugate it, run from it, escape from it with all kinds of tricks, it will not (in such conflict) help you to understand its nature (which is yourself).   When anger takes place, seeing it with separation, with friction, with measurement from an isolated center, with opposing ideals (which are obtrusions about the future), perpetuates conflict (which anger is a part of).  Be in direct relationship with what the contents of your mind are (without pretense); they are you anyhow.  Then such right relationship opens you to real learning, real flowering.  Integrity is to be fully aware of what you actually are, without excuses, without judgments, without mental projections about possible future improvements.  Real integrity is pure (unsullied) perception and is real relationship.  Real relationship goes beyond conflict, is illuminating, and it transforms without effort, without blueprints.  Compassion, order, and integrity take place when right relationship deeply exists.

[Note:   These are Daisy’s Neon Blue Ricefish in one of our aquariums.  They are very peaceful and playful fish.  Their eyes have a florescent blue coloring, but photographs do not show this well.  These were all home-bred by me.  The females carry eggs around attached to their bodies like a clump of grapes.  They are eventually rubbed off onto plants where they dangle from long stringy-like filaments.  They eat their own eggs, but i put green yarn mops in their tank and remove the mops to a separate aquarium away from the parents.  These fish were first discovered on Sulawesi Island in 2007.   The species was discovered in a small stream by the Indonesian invertebrates expert Daisy Wowor, while she was looking for crustaceans, and the species was appropriately named after her: ( Oryzius woworae. )]

One’s Relationship with Nature…

To have a decent rapport with nature, one must perceive beyond the limited walls of an isolated self.  To really be in harmony with nature, one must (first and foremost) be harmonious psychologically.  A mind of inner dissonance (and lack of harmony) does not perceive holistically; it sees fear as something that it has, not as something that it is not (at all) separate from; it sees nature as being “over there,” not as something that it is not separate from.  A mind of conflict, fear, prejudice, and inner distortion will often — even if it insists otherwise — perceive nature with fragmentation, indifference, and corruption.  Likewise, a mind of conflict, fear, prejudice, and inner distortion will perceive other human beings with fragmentation, indifference, and corruption.  To perceive beyond mere contamination the mind would necessarily have to be pure and unsullied.  Is psychological purity what can be accumulated, by someone, over time?

Profound psychological purity is timeless; it is not the result of accumulation or mere cultivation.   Accumulation and cultivation require time.   To be pure, innocent, and spotless (mentally) does not take time.  Time, psychologically, is a postponement, a delay, and it involves a gradual change, a gradual (possible) improvement.  To perceive other life beings with (and “as”) that innocence does not take time.  To look at others (and at nature) in the same old ways does require time; it is time, as the stored (accumulated past) that merely recognizes separate things, sees with (and “as”) separation, pigeonholes things, and exploits people and nature.  Real passion, real love, real order is timeless and pure… unsullied.  Its spontaneity, its freshness, its aliveness, is instantaneously perceptive without distortion.  That lack of distortion is real love, not the spurious (small, self-oriented) kind.  That lack of distortion is wholeness as non-fragmented perception.  

To climb the high mountain, one cannot move far by carrying a lot of heavy baggage.  Very many depend so heavily on their psychological baggage, such that they fail to perceive the real beauty that is there (that excessive baggage cannot take one to).

Beyond the ego…

A mind without that false center — without that fictitious, dominating middle point — is (unlike most) highly aware and perceptive.  There is, in such a person, no psychological radius from a center to a periphery.  Most people cling to a fictitious center in one form or another.  There is limited space — in such a mind — between the so-called controller (or center) and what it presumably controls.  If the central controller is (in fact) just an image, which it is, then it is just another one of the thoughts and is not something that is purely genuine or real.  (Do not make the mistake of becoming depressed regarding this; eternity and beauty can still exist for us, without the interference of fallacious centers.)

Oftentimes, when people think, they think in auditory terms which simulate their own (individual) voice (when talking).  This internal (psychological/rather parasitic) voice mimics one’s actual speaking voice.  It (one’s thinking) isn’t an actual voice; it is a copied template… a simulation.  These simulations and their associated images presume (because of what they were taught) that they are being controlled by a legitimate center.  This center, as was suggested, is another one of the manufactured images.  The mind can function much better without the manufactured image of a center or central regulator.  

Real (fundamental) compassion doesn’t often take place when a fictitious center sees others through (and from) a radius of distance and separation.  A man or a woman without such a fictitious center exists beyond such a radius; then real compassion often manifests.  Order of the mind does not exist as long as a fictitious center exists.  Such a so-called center is associated with a false sense of control and dominance.  A false psychological distance is involved with such a mind.  False psychological distance often means that one’s relationship to fears, desires, plants, animals, people, and sensations is of conflict born out of fallacious separation.  Fallacious separation is not of intelligent compassion… is not what will bring about real order and harmony in the world.

[Note:   This little green plant was discovered growing — in the cold, snowy winter weather — within a small, lawn (crystal ball) solar light in our yard!   All of the other outdoor green plants had already died from the bitter cold, but this one was still going strong in its little makeshift greenhouse!  Nature always finds a way!  🙂   ]

Santa is real…  real love and giving!   Anyone can be the Santa of others.

[Interesting how Santa, when we were very young, was something to get excited about and cherish.  Then, as we get older, many see Santa as being something rather spurious and unreal.  This has connotations that spill over into spirituality and religion.  Many people do not (really) feel that anything truly mysterious and magical (as a sacred phenomenon) can exist.  Deep inquiry, in this regard, is often considered to be a waste of time by many.   Disbelief can be as blinding as mindless belief; insight goes beyond these.]

To function only as mere secondary after-effects… what is that?  Most of us always function as responses to stimuli… one response (or set of responses) after another.  Thinking about things involves responses to stimuli.  Recognizing things constitutes responses to stimuli.  These responses are reactions.  They are much like the reaction when the leg jerks after the knee is tapped with a soft mallet.  Most of us are conditioned responses in a cause/effect continuum.  Conditioned responses (as effects), occurring in (and “as”) a sequence, is time.  Thinking is time; thinking and time are not two separate things.

Can consciousness function without merely always being one series of reactions (in sequence) after another?  Can the mind be aware without merely reacting, recognizing, labeling, and without merely seeing from an image of self?  Can a wise mind exist without constantly being a myriad of effects due to a myriad of causes?  To answer these questions adequately, what will one do?  Will one answer them by way of reaction?

Can thought, when it is not needed — and, oftentimes, it is not necessary — not habitually function in (and “as”) the mind?  If it is thought that merely answers the aforementioned question, is the question being intelligently answered?  Does love go beyond mere thought and time?  

 If one’s love is a mere reaction — formulated to get something in return, contrived to get some kind of result for one’s personal self — is it partial and, therefore, not profound and not very substantial at all?  Love exists when the image of self is not.  It takes time and thought to concoct an image of self (with all the associated desires and fears).  Profound love is timeless.

            spreads out to apparently be disorder

well,we’ll be in the disorder then

            even though the spreading out

really is not separation

 

When the winged bird 

            spreads her wing feathers

well,we’ll be the flying then

            even though the wing feathers

do not dwell as separation

 

When the present time

            spreads out to apparently become the future

well,we’ll be the movement then

            even though the past and future

do not dwell as separation

The Limitation of Experience

Many of us go through existence presupposing things and assuming so many things because of the way we were taught (i.e., because of the way we absorbed patterns from others).  We need to question more.  We need to question things deeply, wisely, and passionately.  There is a real art to questioning.  One can easily fabricate superficial questions that are not of great meaning and depth.  However, asking essential (fundamental) questions concerning the very essence of life and existence…. is not what a lot of people engage in.  Many are caught in a rut, and their lack of significant questions keeps them in that rut.  Often, when such people ask questions, the questions are a mere reflection of the limitation that they exist in (and “as”).  To be trapped in a morass and just remain there — without ever realizing that one is trapped — is a sad thing; such may be the lot of many.

We take for granted that experience and knowledge — which is the accumulation of patterns over sequential time — is the one and only modus operandi that all of us must function in (and “as”) in order to succeed and prosper.  Few of us ever really question as to whether there is an additional alternative.  Many who evolved to realize that there is value in quietness and silence have (for the most part, unfortunatly) made this so-called silence into another form of “experience.”  Along these lines, people (for the most part) practice methodologies — given to them by others — to attain so-called quietness or silence.  However, it may be that any methodology or practice devised to achieve silence — via following procedures — is erroneous, if sequential patterns (no matter what they are) cannot, when practiced, produce what is truly beyond time and sequential paradigms.  It may be that calculated causes and effects cannot produce what is beyond mere “cause and effect.”

Experiencing things often is a good, prudent thing.  The truly wise mind, however, also goes beyond mere experience, doing so without any effort or methodology.  (Engaging in experiencing is largely habitual, and one does not always have to depend upon habits.  Deep intelligence doesn’t always merely remain as habits.)  Experiencing things (in the ordinary way) involves recognition, reaction, labeling, interpretation, categorization, and (often) opinion-making.  Experiencing, for so many, involves the repetitive recognition of patterns via stored (old) memory.  If this takes place (ceaselessly), as it does in so many, then the “old,” the “past,” dictates current consciousness; there can be no renewal nor alive freshness in a mind merely bound to the old past in such a way.  Often, on the other hand, the wise mind newly (i.e., without dependence on the “old”) perceives (without psychological space between an observer and what is seen).  Oftentimes, one can sagaciously look without mere separation, recognition, labeling, and reaction.  Oftentimes, for example, one can joyfully walk where there are beautiful flowers, being fully aware of them just by simply (effortlessly) looking (and deeply seeing their shape and color), but one need not necessarily label them as being beautiful, need not codify them as being flowers, need not see them from a “center” that is separate, nor classify them as being of a certain species.  

The intelligent mind that questions fundamentally and prudently often functions as “experiencing” and “labeling” precisely, accurately, and compassionately; such a mind also often effortlessly goes beyond mere experiencing.  Sequential, fragmentary patterns, for such a mind, fade into the background and there is a wholeness beyond the fabrications of man, beyond mere acquisition, and beyond mere causality.  (This may sound esoteric or exotic, but it is really very simple, involving real integrity.)  There is real bliss when psychological fragmentation and piecemeal acquisition ends; ironically, those stuck only in the sequential patterns of experience remain there to often contend with inevitable monotony and boredom.  One can try to escape the superficial in so many ways, by so many different experiences.  However, one cannot escape the superficial via endlessly more of the superficial.

That Immeasurable Energy…

There is an indelible energy that is safely beyond the conflict and turmoil of our world and universe.  It is beyond the grasp of corruption.  It exists beyond the time and space that involves competition, strife, friction, separation, and domination.  For it to visit one, one must be of an innocence and emptiness that is not a result of what others have fabricated.  Mere reactions, mere imitation, will never help it to manifest in oneself.  Reactions and any form of imitation are part of the conditioned responses that are components of the cause and effect continuum of sequential time (in limited space).  Its timelessness, its spacelessness is not what can be harnessed and captured by the limited concoctions of man.  Any methodology to “get it,” including any organized religion or plan of philosophy… is likely highly erroneous, as it is beyond sequential methods, systems, and practices.  It is too alive and immense for any dead system or calculated procedure to bring one to it.  

It is not at all likely to come to one who is immersed in corrupt and antiquated psychological frameworks involving separation and conflict.  A supposedly separate ego that (through a screen of concepts) sees itself apart from the whole of nature or mankind is not likely to be visited by it.  A (non-global) mind that clings to man-made, separative countries and religions that (directly and indirectly) divide man against man will not likely be visited by it.  A mind that thoughtlessly pollutes life or that indifferently harms life’s creatures will not likely ever be visited by it.  Although many distorted minds have no real relationship with it, they pray to (images of) what they think — and were taught — it is.  Not having an ego, it (of course) would not ever want to be praised or recognized in terms of devotion.  Additionally, it may be that it does not readily bestow favors to those who pray or ask for benefits… since it may not (at all) be biased to favor intelligent-oriented species (who can ask for favors) as opposed to equally precious species (or individuals) who do not have the intelligence to ask for favors.  Additionally, it would not likely interfere with a cause/effect universe that it is not a part of (nor the cause of).  Too many, always remaining in (and “as”) their conditioning, have no actual relationship with it, yet they anthropomorphize it and project their corrupt attributes onto what they fabricated it as being.

Few are ever visited by it.  Few are open and pure (beyond the desires and methodologies implanted within them by others).  There is no “how” for getting it to visit one.  Indeed, when one is truly wise, stable, joyful, and mindful (without constant measure and mere calculation)… then one does not spend “time” desiring its presence.   Without effort, real awareness goes beyond falsities and delusive boundaries.  Without those boundaries, reactions are not as prevalent (i.e, they lose their shadowy hold on one), superfluous (habitual) thinking ends, experiences are not merely depended upon for consciousness, space between things loses much of its significance, and the infinite is (beautifully) easier to perceive.

The steps to the train they know their name

The sign by the bus creates a big fuss

The gate by the tree bent its left knee

The red light in town gave a huge frown

The bite off the peach spoke each to each

The cat on the floor petted more and more

The letter to the friend had plenty to spend

The tree by the brook gave a sweet kindly look

The snail by the well some flowers did sell

The fossil on the stone held its own cellphone

The fear by the door drowned by the shore

The bouncing ball was a joyful dog at a wall

The fog around the house chased a wild mouse

The slicing of bread would soon go to bed

The white toilet seat had just enough to eat

The smiles on the train did not ever complain

In the pursuit of color

               levelheaded snapshots happened twice

at the heartflower of everything

               feathered sirens sang their song

 

Simply sweet as nature’s grace

               they nurture beauty and joy

far from apathy and indifference

               implicit order moves along

 

Not overwrought with stilted lies

               but beyond the obtuse pool

lone in the plush prairie preludes

               pristine charm transcends war

 

Here as there is nowhere

               beyond cold space’s creed

just as now always was

               the flower’s passage widens perceive

Timelessness Revisited

I’ve written about timelessness in the past.  Some people, one has noticed, have mistakenly abstracted that “timelessness” to be a static thing… an inert thing.  On the contrary, the beauty of timelessness is not of the lifeless, the dormant, nor the comatose.  Stagnant minds — as so many, unfortunately, are — cannot be in a relationship with it.  It is too dynamic, too alive and energetic to be in direct relationship with the listless, cold, and lackadaisical.

Most of us never question things deeply and intelligently.  Most of us never wonder about whether or not existing in (and “as”) patterns (and experiences, which depend on mere patterns) is the only way in which to go through life.  Our religions, our politics, our everyday mundane routines in life are all based upon patterns and sequential cause and effect paradigms.  Need one just be that?  (If so, is one then merely a series of reactions?  Merely existing as a series of reactions may be what stagnation is… may be what a kind of death is.)  Most never ask about this.  Most never go beyond the limited domain that was handed over to them.  It’s like a fish bowl in the vast ocean… and the fish (within) never (ever) going beyond the confines of the bowl.  That bowl, that we have accepted and remain in so diligently, is limited, is confinement.  That limited bowl, for humans (who evolved from fish, by the way), consists of thought, fragmentary reactions, and conditioning. If you wish, stay there.  

All of the isolated governments, all of the standard, separate religions and traditions of the world keep you there, in what is limited.  Going beyond the limited doesn’t take time.  However, they’ll be more than happy to give you oodles of methodologies (that take time).
