Why should Haiku involve
the counting of syllables?
This isn’t Sesame Street!

And it’s not a haiku, but yes we may resent having to keep to a strict form and modern verse tends to be free, but I do think that keeping to minimalism helps us encapsulate only the most important thoughts.

Your haiku cracked me up. The etheree form that I love also depends on counting syllables, but that’s not the end of it. Finding a way to include metaphor, rhyme, rhythm, and poetic images within that structure is quite a challenge: part of the charm of haiku, as well.

I love the strict structure of a haiku. It’s so much more than 5-7-5 😊 love the pic. Can’t say I’ve even seen one of those!!

That Red Admiral almost blends in with the background since it is so still. We count letters in an effort to be precise, which we are not.

“We count letters in an effort to be precise, which we are not.”
Exactly, Linda! The story of humanity, so far! Our so-called expert scientists, who are so good at math and analysis, are now looking to other planets to zoom to. Why not face the real issues here and clean up our planet here? “There” is too far away; “there” is too childish (and is a big cop-out).

That’s very true and looking to live on other planets is such a colossal waste of time, energy and money. Clean up Mother Earth and put that money and research to good use on how to preserve and better our own planet. And, I get angry when I hear all the developments as to electric cars, or driverless cars and all the artificial intelligence stuff these days – find a cure for cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease and then pat yourself on the back. (I’ll quietly step down from my soapbox now.)
