I found my first monarch caterpillars in the wild a couple of weeds ago, and nearly died with happiness. It’s quite a different experience to ‘free-range’ caterpillars. It’s interesting to compare the monarch markings with this one. They’re very similar, but a closer look shows the differences.
I found some monarch cats too, in our area, during the summer, but most of them did not make it, unfortunately, to adulthood. I’m very glad that our state (Illinois) is doing more to enhance their milkweed habitat; a whole lot more needs to be done.
Gorgeous details and color!
Thank you, Donna! They are intricate! 🙂
Lovely creature.
And destined to get even more lovely, CC! 🙂

Thanks much, TJ! Keep macroing! 🙂
That is a pretty picture. The colours are quite striking.
And it will get even more colorful while butterflying! 🙂
What vibrant colors! Beautiful as a caterpillar but the best is yet to come! Nicely captured Tom! 😊
Yes, the best is yet to come… unless one likes eating without soaring! Thanks, Sabine! 🙂
Wow! That is just awesome. So beautiful and mysterious and amazing! Thank you!
Thank you, ESA! 🙂
This lime-green caterpillar sure stands out in a crowd!
And, Linda, it’s not on anyone’s pampered tomato plant, fortunately! 🙂
I have seen these swallow tails in Greece, but didn’t know how beautiful the nymphs are. Have a nice day, regards Mitza
Wonderful photo, but what a brilliant poem
