Thanking your food…

When i eat a meal, i usually mentally thank the food; (i guess it is much like the way the very wise Native Americans used to do… and still do). All food — whether plant or animal — had to die for us to eat it.

And when i walked out of the grocery store today, i thanked the (past) poor creatures who had to die (and lose their land) such that the vast grocery store parking lot could be formed for our polluting cars… not to mention the endless lifeless, paved streets and the area that my home exists upon (though i do have a lot of aquarium fish and critters inside).

I bet that not many people ever thanked the creatures who used to live where that lifeless parking lot is. And now, writing this, it reminds me of that song, “They paved paradise, put up a parking lot (ooh, bop-bop-bop-bop)”

We so-called modern humans need to be a lot kinder and more compassionate to nature. That is easier said than done.

“Hey farmer, farmer put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees
Please

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone
They paved paradise, put up a parking lot”

Carnivorous Capers… (i.e., our Ant friend is still at it!)

It takes a lot of hard work to keep the colony healthy and thriving but i
realize that the colony and i are one.  We are each other.  What each of us does is done for all.  (Unlike those ruthless, competitive, bipedal apes, we are 100% cooperative and act for all.)

So here i am,
hauling another large bounty of meat for the colony to feast upon.
Maybe now i will finally get the recognition that i deserve.
Maybe now i will be the great worker-ant that all of the
other ants will aspire to be like.

But first, i must get this great bounty to the anthill.
While they are feasting, they will be thinking of me.
Oh lucky me for finding this treasure of voluminous, wonderful meat!

P.S. —  Don’t cringe!  (I know that you bipedal apes are watching… and judging.)  You bipedal apes eat hairy cattle and pigs and unquestioningly think and feel that it isn’t gross in the least.
So don’t judge!

An Ant’s Perspective of Bigness

It was such tremendous luck finding this big green meal for the colony

It is very difficult to move all of this fine meat toward our anthill but
when I get it to the colony I will become a
great heroine

I will be known as the one who courageously
brought a lot of protein for the many larvae
all the while risking being stepped on by
those giant frightening bipedal apes

I will be revered and may even be promoted to

the job of attending to the Queen

Oh I am so very excited and happy

Finally meeting your Long Lost Auntie

Yes, dears, I am your long lost auntie.
We finally get to meet, my sweet loved ones!
Life’s been tough, as you can see by all of the
many timeworn scratches on my aged back.
Come, come, I have some sweet, fresh salad for you to enjoy!
You had better eat it while it’s fresh…
that way, you will get all of the best vitamins that will help you grow.
Eat plenty, eat!

After we eat, that is when
your loving auntie will hug you dearly.
We’ll hug and hug to make up for all of the lost time that
has befallen us.
Now, let’s eat, dearies, let’s eat!

When i first laid eyes on you

it was love at first sight

Then i got to know you better and realized

that we have so very much in common

You relish eating delectable meals

          (So do i)

You love to smell the nearby, splendid wildflowers

          (So do i)

You love the songs of the joyful, little birds early in the mornings

          (So do i)

You like to watch beautiful horses sprightly prancing around

          (So do i)

You love to roll around in the sweet, textured mud

(So do i)      (Well,at least i did when i was your age)

You dislike being bossed, bullied, and pushed around by heartless people

          (Same for me)

As time went by,i became even more enamored with you

Rumor had it,though, that you might be liquidated by carnivorous others

(That played heavy on my heart)        I was looking forward to seeing you again

but not (being myself a long-term vegetarian) between

someone else’s two slices of bread

It is a shame when others dismiss you as

          merely being a swine

We are all hoggish in our lives in

          one form or another

This poem is dedicated — with much respect and fondness —  to Jinx.  Jinx was a bus driver at the school for the multiply handicapped where i worked as a teacher.  In warm weather, i would often take my sack lunch to the beautiful river that was right on the school property… and eat my lunch on the banks, watching the river go by.  Jinx would often be there fishing during his lunch break; he would release any fish that he caught.  Jinx, when he found out that i was a vegetarian, told me that he had been the owner of a pig farm for many years.  Then, one day, he decided to give it all up, because it seemed wrong to be raising them for slaughter.  Jinx became a vegetarian.  Quite some time later, after i had switched over to another school, i found out that Jinx died.  Jinx was driving through Chicago.  He had seen a house on fire and heard screams from children inside the house.  Without hesitation, Jinx ran into the house in an attempt to rescue the children.  Jinx died in that fire.  He is a true hero (and he had real love).
