[Note: The two large fangs (i.e., chelicerae) of this spider can be seen here. The lower one (of this tilted arachnid) is more in shadow, but the upper one can be seen a bit better. It extends from just under that little red-orangish area to where it curves (fang-like) to the right and backwards.]

My Blog primarily consists of close-up nature photos (that I've taken locally) combined with original holistic-truth oriented prose and/or poetry involving mindfulness/awareness. I love nature and I love understanding the whole (not merely the parts and the details). I'm a retired teacher of the multiply handicapped. I have a number of interesting hobbies, such as fossil collecting, sport-kite flying, 3D and 2D close-up photography, holography, and pets. Most of all, I am into holistic self-awareness, spontaneous insight, unconventional observation/direct perception, mindfulness, meditation, world peace, non-fragmentation, population control, vegetarianism, and green energy. Stay mindful, understanding, and caring!...

  1. When I was young I had such a huge fear of spiders – no doubt from how they are used by film companies. Yet, spiders are so necessary to life – as are all creatures. I no longer fear them as I once did but I will keep a healthy distance from certain species. LOL

Fantastic shots, Tom, as per usual for you. πŸ™‚

  2. Yikes … macro photography can overwhelm! But great to see all this detail from a safe distance. Halloween night I’ll be camping … and now watching for spiders!

      • outstanding photography! i’ve a bit of spider obsession too, they often appear in my dreams, and i created a collage of a large, golden web that hangs on my wall.
both spiders and webs are full of symbolism.

      • Interesting, monicat! 😊
        A Noiseless Patient Spider
        BY WALT WHITMAN

        A noiseless patient spider,
I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form’d, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.

  3. This is an amazingly up-close photograph that you’re sharing with us Tom. I do appreciate the detail of this less-than-cuddly creature.
