People don’t realize that I
take all my photos without a camera.
Photographic memory, you see.
[Note: This is a shot of an Ivory Mystery Snail and some Painted Fire Red Shrimp in one of my aquariums. I breed both the snails and the shrimp. It is so cool about how the snails and shrimp get along with each other so well! The snails often rise up to expose more of their bodies to the shrimp… in order to get groomed and get little parasites or debris taken off by the shrimp. I’ll have to get a shot of that sometime! ]

They sure do get along well! 🙂 The one in the photo is a male. That is his penis sticking out from underneath its shell posterior to the eye. Don’t stare at it, for God’s sake! They lay their eggs out of water, above the water line, and i had one pair lay far too many eggs than i wanted. I finally finished selling all the young ones on eBay. 🙂

I think that’s called a commensal relationship between the shrimp and the snails. There are some variations on this type of pairing, but its remarkably common in nature.
Or symbiotic relationship. The snails get groomed by the shrimp and get parasites, debris, and algae removed and the shrimp eat free food, including the very nutritious slime from the snails. 🙂

Creatures protect other creatures … that’s a beautiful thing. A fellow blogger is a photographer in Tofino, Canada. He came across the body of a river otter floating in the water two days ago, someone had skinned it and taken its pelt. It had just happened – blood not coagulated yet. He was upset at not only the scene, but such a senseless and brutal act. I felt sick, angry and sad reading his account of this.
Yes, it sure sounds very tragic. If i would have seen something like that it would really get to me. People can be very cruel. I am glad that i’m a vegetarian and belong to the Sierra Club. Otters are so comical, naturally playful, curious, and dynamic.
I was sorry that I saw it quite frankly. He usually only posts photos that are stunning – mostly eagles and other waterfowl, and some beautiful scenery. He often has photos of otters, or sea lions sunning themselves, and now many photos of black bears since they have come out of their dens, alone and with their cubs. It is beautiful there in Tofino – very picturesque.
I’m still so fascinated by those shrimp! Great photo 😊

In her book Pilgrim At Tinker Creek, Annie Dillard talks about the difference between walking with a camera, and walking without. Like you, she suggests that these kinds of seeing differ. You might enjoy this quotation from the book:
“The difference between the two ways of seeing is the difference between walking with and without a camera. When I walk with a camera I walk from shot to shot, reading the light on a calibrated meter. When I walk without a camera, my own shutter opens, and the moment’s light prints on my own silver gut.”
